Red dust and sea salt. If you walk through the old neighborhoods near the port, you can still feel the history in the air. This city lying beneath Vesuvius has tied its entire existence to something found in the dark, at the bottom of the sea. The exquisite Torre del Greco Coral.
The Ancient Coralline: Braving the Sea for Authentic Red Coral
There were no large, safe ships in past centuries. There were only the "coralline". They were wooden boats, small and decidedly uncomfortable. They departed in spring towards the coasts of Sardinia or North Africa in search of authentic mediterranean red coral. The men on board knew well they had to be away for months. Fishing meant dropping a heavy wooden cross into the water, called an "ingegno", to which old hemp nets were attached. It was dragged along the bottom to entangle and tear off the red branches in an act of brute force and labor.
The Birth of the Coral Capital
Towards the end of the eighteenth century, things took a different turn. King Ferdinand IV of Bourbon realized the true value of those red branches. He decided to bring order to that chaotic trade and in 1790 created the Coral Company. The idea was to protect the fishermen and keep the wealth in the territory. It worked. Torre del Greco stopped being just a starting point for desperate sailors and became the true global hub for Torre del Greco coral jewelry.
The Workshops, Cameos, and Real Coral Identification
Artisan workshops were born. The branches torn from the sea began to be cut and polished in town. Working the coral required files, bows, gravers, and calm breathing. A small pressure error and the piece would crumble. It is precisely in those dimly lit rooms that the tradition of engravings and famous Italian cameos took root. In 1878, the School for coral processing also opened its doors to pass down the mastery of real coral identification and craftsmanship from one generation to the next.
The Volcanic Identity of Torre del Greco
The volcano behind the city has erupted many times over the centuries, but the people have always stubbornly rebuilt everything in the exact same place. Perhaps it is the exact same stubbornness needed to pull up the nets on the coralline. That red material seen today in shop windows has never been just a piece of jewelry. It is the raw result of centuries of callouses on hands, the sea, and workshops full of magical dust.
Torre del Greco Coral has never been just a jewel to adorn a dress. It is the raw legacy of centuries of the sea and dusty workshops.
